New Zealand News Desk!!! At least six people were killed and several are missing after a fire broke out at a hostel in New Zealand’s capital Wellington on Tuesday. Emergency services were called to a fire at the four-storey Loafers Lodge hostel shortly after midnight on Tuesday, the BBC reported. Dozens of people were evacuated from the building, but police said many more were unaccounted for. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found the building engulfed in flames. By 4 am, at least 20 fire engines were involved to help douse the fire.

Fire and Emergency District Commander Nick Pyatt described the fire as Wellington’s worst nightmare. The BBC quoted local media as saying that officers rescued at least five people from the roof of the burning building and one person was seriously injured after jumping from the building’s third floor. In a statement, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said the death toll was likely to rise. He expressed grief over this incident. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
