Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to start negotiations on European Union (EU) membership. “The time has come to make a positive decision to start negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union,” Zelensky told reporters after talks with von der Leyen in Kiev. Zelensky said a positive interim assessment of Ukraine’s progress on European integration could be received by the European Commission in June. Von der Leyen described as positive Ukraine’s efforts to fulfill the seven conditions put forward by the European Commission for the start of negotiations. “I want to express my deep respect for this work,” said von der Leyen. Please know that you can count on our expertise and support throughout this process. In June 2022, EU leaders accepted Ukraine as a candidate for membership in the EU bloc. In January this year, Prime Minister Denis Schimel said that Ukraine aims to become a member of the European Union within the next two years.
