Iran’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Irani, said the illegal presence of foreign military forces, including the US, in Syria is a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter and a main source of insecurity in the Arab state. State news agency IRNA reported on Friday that Iravani made the remarks while addressing a UN Security Council meeting on Syria on Thursday. They called for the immediate and complete withdrawal of unlawful forces from Syria, which is necessary to resolve the crisis and create an environment conducive to restoring peace and stability in the region, Xinhua news agency reported. Irani condemned the continuation of unilateral sanctions as a major obstacle to improving the humanitarian and economic situation in Syria. He said such illegal measures have had a devastating effect on the economy and standard of living of the Syrian people. The envoy stressed that the recent deadly earthquakes in Syria make it even more important to remove unjust sanctions. He added that Iran welcomes the improvement of Syria’s diplomatic relations with the region and the world, especially with other Arab states, in order to guarantee the security, stability and well-being of the Syrian country.
