Israel: PM Benjamin Netanyahu withdraws announcement to sack Defense Minister

Europe News Desk! Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has retracted his decision to sack the Defense Minister. Netanyahu recently called for the sacking of the defense minister for his outspoken criticism of a controversial judiciary overhaul plan. Netanyahu said in a televised press conference on Monday that he decided to keep Yoav Galant in office, citing increasing violence in the region, Xinhua news agency reported. Netanyahu said, I have decided to resolve the differences between us. We will continue to work together to protect the citizens of Israel.

While embroiled in weeks of an internal debate over a controversial plan to reform its judicial system, Israel has suffered two Palestinian attacks that killed four, and Lebanon, amid rising tensions with the Palestinians recently. Rockets rained down from Syria and the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu announced on March 26 the removal of the defense minister, a senior member of the right-wing Likud party, after the minister called for stalling the judicial overhaul. Despite the announcement, Minister Galant technically remained in his ministerial position, as Netanyahu did not take the necessary formal steps to remove him.
