The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Britain’s most senior diplomat in India late on Sunday night and lodged a strong protest over the alleged pulling down of the tricolor from the Indian High Commission building by some pro-Khalistan groups. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted along with a statement from the ministry: India lodges strong protest with UK. Some Khalistani groups protested at the Indian High Commission in London over the Punjab government’s action against self-styled fundamentalist preacher Amritpal Singh. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that an explanation had been sought for the complete absence of British security, which had allowed these elements to enter the High Commission premises. It said, he was reminded of the UK government’s basic obligations under the Vienna Convention in this regard. In a statement, it said it finds the UK government’s apathy towards the security of Indian diplomatic premises and personnel in the UK unacceptable. It said, it is expected that the UK government will take immediate steps to identify, arrest and prosecute everyone involved in today’s incident and will take strong measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
