German newspaper Bild reported that police said it was not clear at this time why the shots were fired. Police said that no evidence of the escape of the criminal has been found. The local police had earlier tweeted that a massive search operation was being conducted in the area. Hamburg’s mayor, Peter Schnitzer, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
