Europe News Desk!!! The Iraqi army said an airstrike in eastern Iraq and a raid in the west killed four Islamic State (IS) militants. The media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement that based on intelligence reports, Iraqi warplanes on Friday bombed an IS position in the Himrin mountain range, killing three IS militants. The statement gave no further details about the bombed IS hideout, but said more details would be released later, Xinhua news agency reported. A security source told the news agency on condition of anonymity that one of the three killed was believed to be a local leader of the extremist group. Despite repeated military operations against remnants of IS, extremist militants are still holed up in the Himreen mountain range, which spans three provinces – Diyala, Salahuddin and Kirkuk. The security situation in Iraq has been improving since the defeat of IS in 2017. However, IS militants have since penetrated into urban centres, deserts and rugged terrain, carrying out frequent guerrilla attacks against security forces and civilians.
